Leupold Scopes – Leupold optics are known for their clarity and durability, and they have become one of the most popular brands among hunters and tactical shooters. Originally, Leupold scopes catered to the high end market, however, in the last several years, they have also started making scopes for the mid-level market. Leupold also recently acquired the Redfield brand name and has been making lower priced models under that label. Many Leupold scopes are equipped with their proprietary Quantum Optical System which starts out with computer designed lead free glass lenses and then models receive a different combinations of optics features as they are assembled. For example, Leupold scopes in the VX-1 series use the base lead free glass plus the MulitCoat 4 lens coating, and are purged with nitrogen gas. The Leupold scopes in the VX-6 series use the same base lead free glass plus the Xtended Twilight lens coating, DiamondCoat 2 lens coating, blackened lens edges and filled with argon/krypton gas for a “second generation” waterproofing which provides absolute waterproof integrity. Here’s a selection of the most popular Leupold scopes:
Leupold VX-6 CDS Rifle Scopes – One of the most recent editions, these Leupold scopes features high end lens coatings, second generation waterproofing, and is built on a 30mm main tube. Some of these Leupold scopes are available with Leupold’s Custom Dial System (CDS) which can be precisely matched to your rifle’s ballistics. With the purchase of Leupold scopes, you will need to send your ballistics to Leupold and they will send back to you a customized elevation dial ballistically matched to your rifle. The CDS system works by laser-inscribing your scope’s elevation dial to match your load, velocity and conditions.
Leupold VX-3L Rifle Scopes –These Leupold scopes are best known for their distinct objective shape, which allows for a larger objective scope end that can be mounted lower than traditional style scopes with the same objective size. These Leupold scopes are loaded with the premium Quantum Optical System with the Xtended Twilight Lens System, DiamondCoat 2 lens coating, blackened lens edges, second generation waterproofing, twin bias spring erector system, and cryogenically treated adjustments.
Leupold Golden Ring VX-3 Rifle Scopes with 30mm Maintubes – These Leupold scopes are pretty much the gold standard that all high quality big game scopes are judged against. These Leupold scopes are built on a 30 mm main tube and loaded with Quantum Optical System with Xtended Twilight Lens System, DiamondCoat 2 lens coating, blackened lens edges, second generation waterproofing, twin bias spring erector system, and cryogenically treated adjustments.
Leupold VX-2 Rifle Scopes– Leupold introduced the VX-2 as the replacement of its popular VX-II scopes series. These Leupold scopes are part of the new Quantum Optical System and features the Indexed Matched Lens System, DiamondCoat lens coating, and has second generation waterproofing. Even with these improvements, the price of these Leupold scopes have been kept at the level as the previous version VX-II models.
Leupold VX-1 Rifle Scopes – Also new for 2012 is the VX-1 series that replaces the budget/entry level VX-I models. These Leupold scopes are also a member of the new Quantum Optical System which features the specially ground glass lenses found on all scopes in the new Quantum system and also utilizes the Multicaot4 lens coating. There is still a fair amount of the VX-I models on the market so make sure to look for the number 1 and not the letter “I”.
Leupold VX-R Rifle Scopes with FireDot Reticle – These Leupold scopes are built on a 30mm main tube and has an illuminated red dot in the center of its crosshair, there are several different reticle options all which feature what Leupold has designated the FireDot. These Leupold scopes also feature a Motion Sensor Technology that automatically turns on the FireDot reticle, when it senses the gun being moved, so no time is wasted activating the illuminated dot. Other features of these Leupold scopes include an extended focus range eyepiece, blackened lens edges, and Index Matched Lens System. All exterior lens surfaces are treated with DiamondCoat lens coating for optimized light management and scratch resistance. Absolute waterproof integrity.
